LaShonda Allen

A mother’s search for answers became the beginning of a sanctuary for scalp care, wellness, and restoration.

The Kitchen didn’t begin as a spa.

Long before The Kitchen became a spa, it was a mother standing in her kitchen searching for answers for her daughter.

Nearly eighteen years ago, LaShonda Allen began looking for solutions when the products and treatments available for her daughter’s scalp and hair simply weren’t working. Instead of accepting the limitations of what was on the market, she began researching ingredients, studying skin and scalp health, and experimenting with organic blends of oils and botanicals.

She paid close attention to what actually soothed, nourished, and restored the scalp and hair. Along the way, she became deeply mindful of the ingredients she was using, choosing natural, organic, and non-toxic solutions that support long-term scalp and hair health.

Traditionally, in many Black homes, hair care happens in the kitchen. It is where oils are warmed, where patience is practiced, and where loving care is passed from one generation to the next. That is where LaShonda’s journey began—not as a business, but as a mother searching for answers.

Over time, the results became undeniable. Today, her daughter Russia’s hair is long, thick, and healthy, reaching past her rear end. It is entirely her own hair, and it reflects years of intentional care rooted in knowledge, consistency, and love.

What began as personal research eventually became professional study. LaShonda went on to pursue education, deepening her understanding of scalp health, hair growth cycles, and the role that plant-based remedies and holistic care can help play in restoring the scalp and hair.

During the COVID years, LaShonda began treating the scalps and hair of family and friends in her home. Word traveled quickly. Soon there were too many people coming through her house for treatments to remain a small personal practice. It became clear that what she had developed was not just a solution for one person or one family. It was something many people were searching for.

In August 2024, LaShonda officially opened The Kitchen Head Spa in Farmington Hills, Michigan, in the Metro-Detroit area.

The response has been immediate. The Kitchen quickly became fully booked, and the spa is moving into a larger space in April 2026 to meet the growing demand.

Clients travel from across the region seeking relief from scalp conditions such as alopecia, thinning, dryness, and sensitivity, as well as care for protective styles and overall scalp wellness.

Each visit begins with a digital scalp analysis and a personalized treatment plan tailored to the client’s unique needs. From there, clients can experience a range of restorative services that support what The Kitchen calls foundational beauty—the essential care rituals that help people feel confident, radiant, and grounded.

In addition to scalp therapy, The Kitchen offers reflexology, acupressure, stretching therapy, facial treatments, lash extensions, body waxing, and beard detox services for men. Clients can also continue their care beyond the spa through virtual consultations and retail products designed to support healthy scalp and hair routines at home.

Together, these services create an experience that goes beyond traditional head spas.

It is an oasis.

A place where people come not only to restore their scalp and hair, but to exhale and reconnect to their true selves.

“I didn’t set out to start a spa. I was just trying to help my daughter. What I discovered along the way is that so many people needed the same care, the same attention, and the same place to simply breathe and be restored.”

Every day, LaShonda watches women walk in carrying stress, fatigue, or frustration—and leave feeling lighter, calmer, and renewed.

Those moments of transformation are the clearest proof that what began in a kitchen nearly two decades ago has grown into something much bigger.

The Kitchen is not just about hair.

It is about care.
It is about restoration.
It is about honoring beauty rituals rooted in culture.
And it is about creating a space where people can exhale and reconnect to their true selves.
